A house, a barn, sixty acres · One wedding a day

Marry in the garden. Dance in the barn. Wake up in the house.

A Georgian house and its grounds, kept for one wedding at a time. Up to 180 at dinner, fourteen bedrooms for the people who matter, and a coordinator who has done four hundred of these and still cries at the speeches.

One wedding a day, and the whole place is yours.

There is no second party in the east wing and no conference in the Library. From ten in the morning until the last car leaves, the house, the barn, the gardens and the beds are yours and your guests'. The ceremony can be in the Orangery, under the oak on the lawn, or in the barn with the doors open; dinner is in the barn or the Great Hall; the dancing is wherever the band is. The house sleeps thirty, the coach house another eight, and breakfast the next morning is the part everyone remembers.

  • A coordinator from the first visit to the last dance, included in every package.
  • Our own kitchen, our own cellar, and a list of suppliers we trust but never insist on.
  • Wet-weather plans for every outdoor space that are not a marquee on the car park.

How the day tends to run

Every wedding is planned from a blank sheet, but four hundred of them have taught us a shape that works. Move anything.

  1. 10:00The house

    The house is yours

Bridal party into the Garden Rooms, breakfast on the terrace, suppliers on site from eleven.

  2. 14:00The Orangery or the oak

    Ceremony

Thirty minutes, give or take the readings. The registrar comes to you.

  3. 14:45The Walled Garden

    Drinks on the lawn

Canapés from the kitchen, lawn games if you want them, photographs while the light is good.

  4. 16:30The Great Barn

    The wedding breakfast

Three courses from our kitchen; speeches between the main and the pudding, or before, or never.

  5. 19:30The Great Barn

    Cake and the first dance

The band or the DJ from eight; the bar runs until half past midnight.

  6. 21:00The barn yard

    Evening food

Something from the fire pit for the evening guests and anyone who was too nervous to eat earlier.

  7. 00:30The Great Barn

    Last orders, last song

Carriages at one. The house guests wander up the drive; breakfast is at nine.

“Eleanor had a plan for rain, a plan for the band being late and a plan for my father's speech running long. We needed two of the three and never noticed either.”

“We eloped with twelve people in the Library in January. Fire lit, a dinner that would embarrass most restaurants, and the whole house to ourselves. Best decision we made.”

“The barn photographs well, everyone says that. What nobody tells you is breakfast the next morning with thirty hungover people you love in a house that feels like yours.”

The full calendar runs two years ahead; ask and we will send it. A midweek date in the same month is usually a third less.

Eleanor Ashby

From Eleanor, who runs the house

I have coordinated four hundred and eleven weddings here and I can tell you the thing that makes a day: not the flowers, not the band, not even the weather. It is whether the people running the place are on your side. We are.

There is one wedding a day because I will not split my attention between two couples, the kitchen is ours because I will not apologise for someone else's chicken, and the beds are in the house because the morning after is half the point.

Come and walk it with me. If it is not the place, I will tell you, and probably suggest one that is.

Eleanor Ashby

Coordinator, since 2015

We host forty weddings a year and no more. The rest of the time the house is quiet, and that is how it stays lovely.

Saturdays go two summers ahead. Walk the house first.

Show-rounds are Tuesday to Thursday and most Sundays, an hour with the coordinator, no obligation and no sales talk. Bring whoever helps you decide.

One wedding a day, always. Yours is the only one in the house.
