A boxer working the heavy bag in a dim gym

Boxing · Strength · Since 2004

Hit something. Properly.

A boxing club, not a boxing-themed gym. Coaches who have fought, a ring that gets used, and a beginners' class every evening where nobody is watching you.

Nobody here is going to sell you a transformation.

You will learn to stand, to move, to throw a jab that lands and to keep your hands up when you are tired. You will get fit because that is what happens when you box three times a week, not because we put you on a programme with a name. The club has produced twelve national champions and several hundred people who never fought and never wanted to, and it treats both the same: show up, wrap your hands, listen.

  • Every coach on the floor has had amateur or professional bouts. No exceptions.
  • Beginners train with beginners. You spar when you ask to, never before.
  • Gloves, wraps and a bag are yours to borrow for the first month.

Your first month

Hand wraps going on before a session

Week one: hands

Wraps, stance, the jab. You will be sore in places you did not know were places. That is the jab.

A boxer working the pads with her coach

Week two: pads

The four punches on the pads with a coach, then on the bag on your own, then the pads again, slower.

Battle ropes, two at a time

Week three: the floor

Your first strength block. Nothing heavy; a coach checks your squat and your hinge and writes you a card.

Two boxers touching gloves before a round

Week four: rounds

Three-minute rounds on the bag with the clock. Sparring only if you ask, and only with headgear and a coach in the ring.

“I turned up at 34, never thrown a punch, terrified. Ray put me with three other beginners and by the end of the hour I could hold a stance. Two years on I am still here and I have never sparred and nobody has ever made me feel I should.”

“Proper boxing gym. The coaches have all fought and it shows in how they teach — they correct the small things before they become habits. The strength floor is the best in the city and nobody is filming themselves on it.”

“My son has been in the teens class for a year. He is fitter, calmer and he does his homework, which I put down to Sam telling him that champions do their homework. Worth every cent.”
